EFOD South West Wales

There was an EFOD SWW Management Team trip to Uganda in early November 2016.
Ian, Delwyn & Anthony accompanied Team 4 to Kachumbala. HKS Architects Dan
and Jessica joined them to develop details of the finishes to the centre. Midwives Carole & Julie arrived
to meet the new Health Centre staff, in view of changes made by the Ministry of Health, and to assist
with plans to equip the centre.

Earl and Craig from Great Done Good in the US came in for four days to deliver 1000 Clean Birthing Kits (CBK's)
to the centre, donated and packed by HKS Dallas staff.

EFOD South West Wales was formed in 2012 to take up the challenge to design a Mill and Grain Store
in Kachumbala, Bukedea NE Uganda. They raised £ 40,000 and send qualified tradesmen to site in pairs
for a fortnight, to supervise construction and pass on to local labour some of the skills they have learned
on their Apprenticeships at Coleg Sirgar, Ammanford.

Eight tradesmen were sent out in pairs to construct a store capable of holding 900 bags of grain
for a widow's cooperative, who are gradually working themselves out of poverty. Work started
in the November and formerly opened in February 2015. The 38 members of the cooperative are now able
to grind their produce, cassava, maize and sorgum ,and store surplus dried produce following harvest, before releasing it to the local market when prices rise, to maximise the value of their crop.

EFOD South West Wales are now working on the provision of a £ 100,000 Maternity Unit for the
Kachumbala Health Centre 3, following a challenge to the First Minister for Wales during his
January 2014 visit to the Kachumbala area. The scheme involves the design and construction
of two labour suites, a twelve bed ward and offices and stores.

The design by HKS Architects, under their Citizen HKS scheme, is complete assisted by
the maternity staff from Hywel Dda Health Authority. Construction started in January 2015
supervised by apprentices from the Cyfle Apprenticeship scheme in South West Wales.
